The
Saint Vincent Hospital Podiatric Residency Program is the only podiatric
residency program in Central Massachusetts.
The program is currently an RPR/PSR-12 with anticipation of being
reaccredited to a PMS-24 in the Fall of 2005.
There
are two residents accepted per year. Each resident has ample clinical and
surgical experiences throughout residency. Podiatry residents complete month long rotations in Internal Medicine,
Vascular Surgery, Rheumatology and Emergency Medicine and two-week rotations in
Radiology, Anesthesiology, Pathology and Endocrinology. Residents cover
emergency podiatric cases through the Saint Vincent Hospital Emergency
Department. Residents participate in hospital consultations and follow
in-patients closely with attending physicians. Residents are responsible for
outpatient care and rotate through private podiatry attending offices. There are twenty-two active podiatry
attendings as well as an active orthopedic foot and ankle attending.
SVH
is affiliated with UMass Memorial Medical Center through which residents
participate in outpatient clinics and assist in surgery. Residents also scrub
cases at the Worcester Surgery Center. Residents actively participate in
surgery throughout both years of training. Residents do not ‘double-scrub’
which allows each resident to make the most of each operating room case.
The
program holds monthly journal club, anatomy workshop and morbidity and
mortality conferences in addition to periodic guest lectures and
workshops. Residents are also
responsible for teaching externing podiatric medical students.
Over the years, residents have come from all
schools of podiatric medicine and currently practice in Central Massachusetts,
throughout New England, and across the country. SVH Podiatric Residency Program
participates in CASPR/CRIP.
