Please read what our
residents had to say about their training:
Johanna
Cryts, MD, Graduate
The reasons I chose SVH include the overall warm and supportive
environment of Department of Medicine, the Program Directors (Drs.
Popkin and Lochrie), and the Chief of Medicine (Dr. Esposito).
Not to mention the gorgeous new hospital! It was also highly
recommended by my Dean at Tufts.
Keith
Cordischi, DO, Graduate
I chose SVH for a variety of reasons: The strong emphasis
on didactics, the intelligence and personalities of fellow houseofficers,
the PD's and faculty are absolutely concerned about the welfare of
the HO's and my interactions with the faculty was always positive.
Mojca
Lorbar, MD, Medicine/Cardiology Fellow Graduate
SVH attracted me because of the enthusiasm of the "Program
Team." There is little scut work and there are a reasonable number
of elective offerings. Morning report is also very good.
Farah
Cheema, MD, Graduate
I have found the staff at SVH to be highly qualified and friendly,
not a bit arrogant and always willing to help out. Everyone
I met during my interview was very encouraging, friendly and down
to earth and made me feel very welcome. There is no prejudice
about foreign graduates, which I think was a big point.
Tian
Wang, MD, Graduate
Not only is St. V's the best looking hospital I have ever
seen, but the supporting staff is excellent so we can concentrate
on patient care. The rotation schedule for the preliminary year
is very manageable - especially for interns. I never felt I
was overworked. Best of all, the faculty is exceptional and
the camaraderie among the residents is great.
Paula
Reis, DO, Graduate
St. V's has the best morning report around! When I was
a fourth year medical student, I had a very positive experience rotating
through the MICU and ID services. The attendings were great
teachers and the pathology was diverse.
Sherri
Dumont, DO, Graduate
The St. Vincent Hospital Residency Program offers a wide
variety of clinical cases yet still maintains a high amount of "bread
and butter" illnesses. The residents and attendings really
care about your learning - you're not a "working machine".
Omer
El-Amin, MD, Medicine/Cardiology
Fellow Graduate
"The work environment is very supportive and this helps me to learn
and be more productive."
Tom
Gilson, DO, Graduate
"I feel guilty taking a paycheck."
Emran
Rouf, MD, Graduate
"I feel very fortunate to be able to train here! Not only
do I get excellent trainingfrom the supportive faculty, but I also feel
I work in a 'resident-friendly' environment. It's a big family
of staff that I am proud to be a part of!!"
David
Weinstock, DO, Graduate, Faculty
The program at SVH is extremely well organized which allows the
housofficers to maximize their learning experience. There is minimal
'scut work' to be done and the support from attendings and other residents
is tremendous. It is a perfect place to learn and enjoy medicine."
Rodrick
Williams, MD, Graduate
"SVH provides an excellent opportunity for preliminary medicine
interns to develop clinical skills and gain a balanced perspective of
how their chosen discipline supports patient care."
Jasvinder
Paintal, MD, Graduate
A very friendly program, surrounded by very smart and friendly
attendings and residents. A true pleasurable place to work."

schedule."
Deepti

"Flexible schedule... available staff... good spirit
among housestaff... interesting colleagues from all around the
world."

a paradise residency program."

I have attended. The residents are exceptional and enjoy teaching.
This is a friendly atmosphere in a great new facility. I am glad
that I did my internship at St. V's."
Mike
Martin, DO, Graduate
As a student and intern
I discovered that the Saint Vincent Hospital residency program is unique
in its approach to the teaching of internal medicine. We receive unparalleled
tutelage from our senior residents and program directors, complemented
by a rigorous didactic conference series. Morning report, noon lectures,
tumor board, ward team and attending rounds all provide opportunities
to share and teach knowledge in a collegial, non-threatening environment.
The clinical experience is designed such that the important exposure
to significant patient pathology is balanced by plenty of opportunity
to review texts and journals. I enjoyed the Saint Vincent experience
so much that this was the only program I needed to rank on my match
list.
While
progressing through the years of residency, we were encouraged to approach
medicine in an evidenced-based manner. The journal club and weekly literature
reviews, combined with the daily board review and host of other quality
lectures, give us the chance to not only critically review the evidence
behind current medical diagnosis and therapies, but to put these into
practice in our daily interactions with our patients. In this way we
all continuously learn from each other, and as a result, have all equally
become stronger physicians. Senior residents are also expected to become
teachers, leaders, and role models for the younger trainees, and in
this capacity are given the responsibility and autonomy to develop our
own particular practice styles. Ultimately Saint Vincent's produces
competent, confident doctors who are well prepared to enter any fellowship
or primary care setting.
As
we move into the new millenium this hospital and program are prepared
to take medical training to new heights. Distinctive qualities of our
internal medicine program include:
- AOA and ACGME dually approved
- Nationally known faculty with many accomplished
authors, who are easily accessible
- Predominantly one-on-one resident and intern interactions
on service
- Winners of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American
College of Physicians state Medical Jeopardy tournament
- Highest submission rate each year for abstracts
to the annual ACP Clinical Vignette competition, with recent representation
at the national ACP conference
- An impressive ABIM Board passage rate
- Excellent track record for placing graduates in
highly competitive and attractive fellowships and primary care practices
- Busy inpatient medicine, ambulatory medicine and
osteopathic medicine clinics, providing exposure to a very wide array
of patient pathology
- Exciting social activities such as organized resident
theater, dinner, holiday, multicultural appreciation, and seasonal
(skiing, apple and pumpkin picking) events
- Opportunities for resident research and publication
- Competitive salary and benefits including such
bonuses as meal provisions for call days, white jackets, educational
fund allowances, and palm-based medical applications
- A major teaching affiliate with UMASS, UNECOM,
and Tufts medical schools
Distinguishing characteristics of Worcester Medical
Center include:
- One
of only a few fully digital, "filmless" radiology centers
in the country
- The only hospital with the two fastest high resolution
CT scanners and MRI in the same facility
- Comfortable and clean lounges and call room areas,
with full hospital and library computer access
- Excellent library services including hundreds of
paper and 30 full-text on line medical journals, electronic medical
databases, and OVID, Medline, and internet search services
- Beautiful campus with coffee and gift shops, salon,
bank, and Atrium with a waterfall
- 24 hour laboratory, IV, EKG, and transport teams,
minimizing the "scut work"
- Convenient access to Boston, New York, and northern
and southern New England
This is a program that promotes evidence-based medical
training, accepts diversity of thought and background, encourages educated
debate, and cultivates a friendly learning environment. You will learn
21st century medicine in the most sophisticated of teaching
hospitals, and continue the fine tradition of superior house officers
who have trained here at Saint Vincent Hospital for over 100 years.
