Our
conferences all take place in an interactive, attractive, stimulating
environment:
Morning Report* (daily): houseofficers and students
meet with the Chief Resident, the Program Director, Associate Program
Director, and several generalists and specialists, for presentation of
recent admissions, follow-up reports, and planned and unplanned discussions
of selected clinical problems.
Teaching Attending Rounds*
(90 minutes, three times per week). The case(s) to be discussed
is determined by the resident. The teaching attending is either
a member of the full-time staff or a selected member of the private attending
staff, assignment based on houseofficer evaluations. Service as
a teaching attending is considered an honor and is assigned only
to attending physicians deemed to be effective in teaching the logic of
clinical management. In the ICU and CCU, there are daily teaching
rounds with the critical care and cardiology faculty, as well as daily
radiology rounds.
Noon Conference* (daily)
includes subspecialty lectures devoted to the core curriculum, including
the basic science of each subspecialty and other topics including women’s
health, managed care, life after residency, ethics and end of life.
Grand Rounds*, Morbidity and Mortality*,
Journal Club*, Journal Review, New England Journal of
Medicine Club, and a Board Review Series are all scheduled
regularly.
Tumor Board (weekly), jointly
run by Surgery and Oncology, deals with complex oncological pathology
and management.
Special conferences
on osteopathic principles and practices are scheduled throughout
the year for our interns in the osteopathic track. These include
regional meetings coordinated through the University of New England College
of Osteopathic Medicine as well as regular resident run OMT tutorials.
Optional regularly scheduled conferences
include Radiology-Pathology, Surgery and Neurology Grand Rounds, and Interhospital
GI, Cardiology, Renal, and Infectious Disease Rounds.
