Frequently Asked Questions
What are the program requirements?
We have no specific requirements other than applying through ERAS, (ie:
no score requirements or specific year of graduation, etc.). Your
application will be reviewed by our Selection Committee when the
entire set of credentials have been received. We are unable to
grant an interview based on an email or phone inquiry.
Do you have a year of graduation
requirement?
No.
Is
clinical and/or
research experience required?
No.
Do you have a minimum score requirement?
No. We do look for passing on the first attempt, but exceptions have
been made in the past.
Can I apply with only one score?
Yes.
What is your ERAS application deadline?
For the Osteopathic (DO) program - December 1, 2008.
For the Allopathic
(MD) program- December 31, 2008.
What makes up a complete application?
Three (3) letters of recommendation plus a Dean's letter with
transcripts, score reports, personal statement, common application form
(CAF), USMLE scores
and transcripts, CSA (CS) results, and ECFMG status
report (if applicable).
Any
other documents may be sent directly to us with a cover letter from the
applicant as to why this material is not being sent via ERAS.
Please be sure to include your ERAS identification number if sending
information under a separate cover.
What
visas do you
sponsor?
We currently sponsor J-1 visas. We also accept
OPT's and EAD's.
** Our program is not exempt from the H1-B cap so we are unable to
sponsor
initial H1B visas.**
Do I have to have my ECFMG certificate when
I apply?
No.
What is your deadline to report USMLE
scores?
All scores need to be received before
the rank order list
submission deadline in mid February.

Does SVH accept paper, email or ERAS applications?
ERAS
only.
(This includes osteopathic applicants).

Yes.

What specific Internal Medicine Programs do
you offer?
Categorical Medicine.
Preliminary Medicine.
A dually approved (AOA/ACGME) Osteopathic Traditional Rotating
Internship.

Is the Osteopathic Traditional Rotating Internship
linked to the residency?
Yes. If you desire a career in primary care, you would first rotate
through our dually approved AOA internship, then advance to the PGY2 and
PGY3 levels, respectively.
What match do osteopathic applicants
participate in?
DO students can register and participate with either the AOA or NRMP
match. However, in order to receive AOA credit, you must participate in
the AOA match.
Does SVH offer any fellowships?
Yes, we offer an independent 3-year
cardiology fellowship followed by a 1-year interventional
program. We have jointly sponsored fellowships with The University of
Massachusetts Medical School in Critical Care, Critical Care/Anesthesia
and Gastroenterology.
What
other residencies are offered at SVH?
Radiology
and
Podiatry.
Does SVH offer combined residency
programs?
No.

Do you offer observerships, externships or

No.

opportunities?
Yes.
When do you conduct interviews?
Interviews are scheduled Tuesday through Fridays. The interview
season runs from October 1, 2007 through January 31, 2008.
(Exceptions will be considered).
How many positions
are available?
3 year (categorical) = 15
1 year (preliminary) = 20
Out of these 35 positions, 6 are funded for Osteopathic students
participating in the Traditional AOA Rotating Internship.
Does SVH accept IMG’s?
Yes.
What is the
placement record for your graduates?
Approximately half of our graduates enter excellent
fellowships
and the other half remain in
primary care.
What is your
Board passage rate? Our
3-year rolling average is 90%.

Is St. Vincent
Hospital
financially stable?
Yes. We are one of the few hospitals in the entire state to be
profitable.
Has SVH ever been placed on probation by the ACGME/RRC or AOA?
No. In the past we have always received stellar reviews and in 2003, all
of our programs received a full 5-year accreditation.
