Resident Achievements

Pi Project

As part of the educational experience of our residents during the ambulatory months, they are expected to develop and complete a Quality Assurance/ Performance Improvement project on a clinical topic relevant to ambulatory medicine. This could represent a chart audit or a retrospective/prospective cohort study. The residents are mentored through this process by one of our Associate Program Directors, Dr. George Abraham. The projects are presented and critiqued on the last Wednesday of every month and the final recommendations are subsequently implemented in practice at our resident run clinic.

Examples of Performance Improvement projects conducted by our residents in 2008 and 2009 are:

  • Alcohol Consumption Survey
  • Assessment of Low Back Pain – How Well Do We Do
  • No Shows – Why Do Patients Miss Their Appointments
  • Improving Care in Diabetic Patients
  • Breast Cancer Screening Efficiency in the SVH Ambulatory Clinic Female Patients
  • Medication Reconciliation
  • Screening for Cervical Cancer
  • Osteoporosis Screening
  • Screening for Colorectal Cancer
